I love fresh food, my family and the planet we live on. As a family, we are moving more and more toward self reliance in terms of food as a way to retain autonomy over what we eat.

Our latest project includes 360 square feet of growing space on our front lawn. Can this space provide nutrient dense sustenance for a family of 5 over a 22 week growing season and beyond? Can this project save us money or even make money? Stay tuned to find out.

Why would people living in countries where food is ‘cheap’, available in mass quantities, and sold in convenient supermarkets, supercenters or wholesale club stores, often disposed of before expiring want to grow their own?

There are about 48 million people in the US trying to grow their own food and statistics from Canada, New Zealand and Europe show similar trends. The international movement toward self-sustainability is certainly gathering momentum.

Although there are various reasons for growing food, food contamination (real or perceived), food modification and food insecurity are often cited reasons.  For me, food contamination, genetic modification and food insecurity (lack of access to nutritious food is a significant problem even in a place like Canada) are key motivating factors for growing my own. Carolyn Herriot, author and local farmer in Central Vancouver Island, defined ‘food security‘ as ‘making sure your neighbour is fed‘. Her words resonate deeply with me.

I like to know and be in control of what goes in and on my food. There is nothing like stepping outside, chopping down some still-warm-from-the-sun cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs and blending them into a nice cool soup. The re-ruralization of the urban and suburban landscape is where it’s at.

Food (in)security elicits a particularly strong reaction in me. I grew up in eastern europe in the 1980’s. My grandparents and parents grew their own food due to food shortages and we were never hungry. We often reminisce about ‘standing in line for toilet paper’. The reality was, people ‘stood in line’ for everything.

We immigrated to Canada in 1986. We were frequent users of the food bank and relied on the kindness and generosity of Canadians for several years. On Saturdays, we went to the local Safeway to pick up day old food on behalf of a local church. The food was distributed to those in need and we were lucky to get a share.

Self-sufficiency and making sure ‘our neighbours are fed‘ are always at the forefront of my mind. Although it has been many years since I’ve had to visit a food bank, I am compelled to contribute in some small way and to pay-it-forward.

I started blogging about the recipes I frequently used in our home (started on blogger December 2015 and changed to WP at the end of August 2016). My goal was to document and share my passion for simple, healthy and delicious recipes. I also wanted to share information related to health, health trends and issues that I deem important to living a life well nourished. All this food preparation and growing has led me down a path of deeper concern about the entire food system and how it affects human health and the environment.

You will find plant-based recipes on this blog. Some are with gluten and some are gluten-free or at least provided with gluten-free options. As time goes on, I find myself drifting toward raw vegan recipes. I have found these to be delicious, simple and nourishing. This stumble into vegan food was serendipitous and welcome on my part.

Coming from a background of meat, potatoes, dumplings and butter (which are all fabulous, BTW), I am relearning to cook using foods grown in our yard or at local, small scale farms. Plant-based eating has far exceeded my expectations and I am grateful to Dr. Theresa Nicassio, Author of YUM: plant-based recipes for a gluten free diet, for opening my eyes to a whole new world of pure deliciousness.

We are a busy family of 5 and simple is where it’s at for me right now. Plant-based eating is fast, tremendously delicious AND healthy.  See For Home Chefs for a list of wonderful and inspiring plant-based cookbooks.
